Cancer. Therapy and fitness has been shown to play an important role in the management of cancer-related neuropathic pain. When pain has already set in, guidance from a physical therapist may facilitate finding those strengthening activities that are manageable. Techniques such as massage used in an integrative approach may alleviate other discomforts related to cancer therapy. E.g., breast cancer surgery that includes axillary (under the arm) lymph node dissection may compromise lymphatic drainage resulting in chronic swelling of the arm and hand. Therapy helps to reduce swelling and minimize the accompanying problems and discomfort.
